Preventative Dentistry

Preventative dentistry is the cornerstone of great oral health. It involves taking proactive measures to prevent dental problems from developing in the first place. Preventative measures often include brushing and flossing daily, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our Flint dentist regularly for checkups and professional dental cleanings.

At Genesee Family Dentistry, we believe that prevention is key to maintaining good oral health. That's why we offer a wide range of preventative services to our patients. These include dental cleanings, dental exams, periodontal screenings, and more. We recommend planning a checkup twice a year, even if your teeth and gums are healthy.

Why Dental Cleanings Are Important

One of the most important preventative services that we offer is professional prophylactic dental cleanings. Even if you brush and floss thoroughly, there are areas of your mouth that are difficult to reach, such as below the gumlines and between teeth. Over time, bacteria and plaque can build up in these spaces, contributing to cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

During your cleaning, one of our dental hygienists will use specialized tools to gently remove plaque and tartar buildup. They will also polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave your teeth feeling smooth and clean.

Adults and children alike should plan to schedule their cleaning at least once every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, more frequent visits may be recommended.

What Happens At

Your Dental Exam?

During your checkup, Dr. Nazarian will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of dental problems. This includes screening for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions in your mouth. We may also take digital X-rays of your teeth to check for any problems that may not be visible to the naked eye. Based on the results of your exam, we will create a personalized treatment plan to address any dental issues that you may have.

Periodontal Screenings

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a common dental problem that affects millions of people. It occurs when bacteria accumulate under the gums and around teeth, contributing to bone loss and tissue detachment. Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and strain your immune system. In fact, aggressive gum disease can increase your chances of conditions like heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, just to name a few.

At Genesee Family Dentistry, we perform regular periodontal screenings to check for early signs of gum disease. During your periodontal screening, one of our dental hygienists will use a special measuring device to evaluate the space between your teeth and gums. If this “pocket” is too deep, it usually indicates active gum disease, and further treatment may be necessary.

Restorative Care

If your teeth are worn, broken, or decaying, we offer a complete menu of restorative treatments to rebuild your smile. Each of these therapies are tailored to your specific situation, so Dr. Nazarian may recommend one or a combination of treatments like:

  • Dental Crowns

Crowns provide full-coverage protection over structurally weak teeth. Each of our crowns are crafted from highly durable, attractive materials that enhance and strengthen your bite. Dr. Nazarian will specify the exact color of the zirconia or Emax crown so that it blends in with your adjacent teeth. We also use crowns on top of dental implants for single tooth replacement.

  • Fixed Bridges

If you need to replace one or two teeth and the adjacent teeth also need a crown, dental bridges serve a twofold purpose. Either end of the bridge acts like a functional crown, suspending an artificial tooth or teeth between them. Bridges can also be installed on top of dental implants.

  • Endodontic Therapy

Root canal treatment treats the source of dental abscesses and preserves dying teeth, reducing your risks of tooth loss. Thanks to modern advancements, today’s root canals can be completed comfortably and more efficient than ever before!

  • Traditional Dentures or Partials

Quickly replace missing teeth with a full “plate” denture or partial denture option. Some of our patients prefer to wear a denture or partial while planning for future dental implant treatment.
